4.1.3 GO INDEPENDENT

Some of the most adventurous students will want to be entrepreneurs and set up their own businesses. This will give them freedom and opportunity; however, they will still need to find their own work.

The advantages to working for themselves reflect those of any industry. They can determine what they do, how much of it they do and with whom they will work. The disadvantages include many of the day to day details of proprietorship like taxes and overhead costs. It will also take a considerable amount of extra planning and effort up front to get started.

The rules of business planning outlined in section 3.2 apply to any business venture. You have to tell people who have a need that you are there and ready to help them. The first step is to decide what service(s) you are going to provide. Talk to as many people as you can to find out what needs they are having difficulty finding a solution for, or where their solutions are ineffective, slow or expensive.

Providing a good service is more than just doing the work. It is providing a professional relaxed and efficient interface between you and your clients. This covers the time from your first contact through to collecting the money after you have sent out an invoice. Prospective clients will have many questions about how you will work with them and it is a good idea to have decided your method of working in advance. Search your libraries and the Internet for information about small businesses and working from home.
